Things to consider when shopping for bedroom furniture

Choosing the right bedroom furniture sounds like an easy task, but it's more complicated than you think. Not only do you need to decide on a size of bed, but you have to figure out how big of a wardrobe or dresser you'll need and you also have to select a style of furniture that will fit in with the rest of your bedroom décor.

Here are a few tips that can make the process of shopping for bedroom furniture easier:

Figure out how much space you need to fill. Before you start shopping, take accurate measurements of your bedroom. It may help to draw a blueprint. Figure out where the bed will go, where the dresser(s) will go and whether you'll want to get additional items like chairs or armoires. Make sure there's enough space for everything!

Pick a style and stick with it. If you want to go retro, pick a specific era (such as the 1920s or the 1970s) and don't mix it with furniture from different eras.

Find out what it's made of. Chances are that you'll be shopping for wood bedroom furniture. Brush up on your knowledge about different types of wood. Do you want bedroom furniture that's made from hardwood or softwood? Make sure the price you pay is appropriate for the type of wood.

Always look for a better price. Don't buy the first bedroom furniture that you find. Be sure to shop around. Second-hand shops can be great sources of hidden gems, as can neighborhood sales. Shopping online or from mail-order catalogs can also save you a penny or two. Even if you decide to buy a bedroom set at your local furniture outlet, at least try to haggle with the salesperson so you get a better price. Many salespeople will be willing to knock an extra $50 off the price if it means you will make the purchase then and there.

Save some money for the mattress. You could go out and buy a €2000 bed, but that doesn't mean that you will sleep in comfort. Don't forget that the quality of your mattress is the most important factor in whether your bed is comfortable or not.
